Muslim and Hindu marriages

Muslim and Hindu marriages are not recognised by law as they can be polygamous, which means the man can marry more than one wife, which is against civil law. The Recognition of Customary Marriages Act legally recognises African customary marriages only. Muslim and Hindu marriages will be dealt with by other similar laws. But if spouses also go through a civil marriage ceremony or are married by a priest who is a marriage officer, the law will recognise their marriage. The husband then cannot marry any other woman by civil law.

The law may change soon to recognise Muslim and Hindu marriages.
